About Our Program

Our first-of-a-kind in the US Figure Skating Program features a unique approach……

The SSM Figure Skating Program combines a college preparatory academic program with intensive figure skating training.  This unique program is intended to serve competitive student-athletes who are committed to a rigorous daily training schedule. The School offers the only integrated elite figure skating program along with challenging academics in a boarding school environment. Our commitment is to help guide our student-athletes to be better students, better athletes and better citizens.

World and Nationally Recognized Coaches

  • Diana Ronayne, Director of Figure Skating and Coach
    Coach Ronayne is the former Director and Resident Coach at Colorado Springs World Arena, CO. She offers skaters years of experience in National and World level coaching and directing programs in Illinois, Michigan, Colorado and now Minnesota. She is Master Rated in Figures and Freestyle. Through her coaching she has earned the Level VII Ranking with the Professional Skaters Association (PSA) and US Figure Skating (USFS) based on top 10 placement at two World Championships. She was nominated for PSA Coach of the Year. She is CER Level A Certified. A Bachelor of Arts in Dance Education and Masters coursework in Physical Education/Biomechanics from University of Illinois has influenced Coach Ronayne’s work. She has a strong belief in Shattuck-St. Mary’s unique model of combining academic and athletic excellence.
  • Leslie Deason, Figure Skating Coach/Program Coordinator
    Coach Deason trained in Southern California and began her coaching career in the San Diego/ Los Angeles.  She is the former Director of Skating Operations and head competitive coach in Boise, ID. She has coached skaters through Senior test and National and International competitions. She is a PSA Triple Master Rated Coach in Freestyle, Moves in the Field, and Program Director, a US Figure Skating Technical Specialist in Singles, previously the PSA Area 14 (Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana) Representative, a Level A CER Coach, and has earned the Professional Skaters Association Ranking of Level III due to her skaters success at Regional, Sectional, National and most recently International Competitions. She currently is responsible for the Sabre Learn to Skate program and our Ice Shows.
  • Brenda Tarkinton, Figure Skating Coach/Conditioning Coach & Coordinator
    Coach Tarkinton trained in the Bay Area of California and is a Gold Medalist in Field Moves and Free Skate as well as Novice Pairs. She previously was the Learn to Skate Director & Head Coach of the Palouse Hills Skate Club in Moscow, ID. She had a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Science from San Jose State University, San Jose, CA and a Master of Education Degree: Physical Education from University of Idaho, Moscow, ID. She holds the PSA Level A CER accreditation. She was a Senior Lady competitor and Collegiate competitor and is pursuing Adult National competition this current season as well as finishing her Junior & Senior Pairs tests.  Her degrees influenced her to develop curriculum for off-ice conditioning and dance and is conducting the strength and conditioning programs for our figure skating team.

  • Our staff also includes full time nurses, athletic trainers, psychologists,
    counselors, college counselors and off-ice strength and dance coaches.
    We offer expert guidance to fully utilize our dance and conditioning programs.
